Oregon Leads the Way Again

What if we could break down plastics to their basic components and recapture the petroleum so that it can be reused, also keeping the petroleum from entering the waste stream?

Once again an Oregon based recycler is on the cutting edge of technology and sustainable entrepreneurism. Agri-Plas, a company headquartered in Brooks, Oregon, has perfected a revolutionary process to convert traditionally unrecyclable agricultural plastics into crude oil which is then shipped to refineries and ultimately used as fuel. The first tanker delivery went out recently to a Tacoma refinery with 8200 gallons of crude (roughly 196 barrels). When the process is completely implemented they estimate that they will be able to ship one of the tankers full of reclaimed crude every day. Our hats are off to Agri-Plas for leading the way to a cleaner and greener tomorrow.

New Recycle Plan Hits Portland

That’s right, it is finally here! The City of Portland’s Office of Sustainable Development (OSD) started sending out information packets to Portland area businesses last week in an effort to capture a larger percentage of recyclable materials which are still ending up in the waste stream. The final program is the result of the OSD bringing together key members from the business community to determine sustainable practices that make sense for everybody.

The OSD, wanting to make sure that their plan has the greatest opportunity for success, chose members from every sector of the community who had a reputation for being energized by sustainable practices. They then formed a Technical Advisory Committee to meet several times throughout last summer to determine best business practices for the new “Portland Recycles!” plan. I was asked to represent the janitorial services of the greater Portland Metro area by attending TAC meetings and raising issues related to our industry thereby helping to determine management practices that could be most easily adopted by the companies that we service. The TAC was a huge success as reflected by the information packets that are being sent and the new plan that is now in place.

Other key members of the TAC included property managers from both commercial and residential, waste haulers, restaurants, independent recyclers, Metro, and neighborhood associations.

The new Portland Recycles! plan information is rolling out in segments that depend on the size and type of company as well as other factors. Contact us to get an information overview that will help keep you ahead of the curve and allow you to start planning today. Also, to help with the roll out of the new plan, we have a “Green Team” available to help create a “Green Plan” for your business to help assure your success. Please contact us to find out how we can help you be successful.
